Lockhart Community Cemetery
The founders of Texas, DeWitt County, Lockhart Community Cemetery Association were deeply rooted in faith and actively served their community. The Mt Zion Missionary Baptist Church of Edgar, Texas, established in 1869 and New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, established in 1899 were the two (2) churches more closely affiliated with the startup of the cemetery. Many of the former members are interred in the cemetery and were Senior Pastors, Senior Deacons, Elders, Trustees and other noble officers of the church and community.
Our Heritage
During the early 1800s the Negro or colored people, of the community had to provide for seperate burial grounds. Some of those interred in the cemetery were either slaves or former slaves. The community worked together to thrive during the difficult times like the great depression.

Cemetery Grounds
On or about November 16, 1910, a few community activists banded together to form and establish the original Lockhart Community Cemetery for Colored People organization. They purchased three (3) acres for $50.00 and created the beautiful memorial garden for their loved ones. They did not charge the community, except for them to care for the cemetery grounds, which they did not honor.
Our Community
As you walk through the cemetery grounds you will observe many fallen soldiers headstones representing nearly all major wars the United States of American (USA) has been involved in for the protection and security of our nation and its people.
